Using PVC Schedule 40 for your pond plumbing.

For years PVC Schedule 40 has been used by many pond builders for it's relatively low cost in materials, but having said this it also depends on the size and extensive use of Schedule 40 for pond plumbing. For the smaller pond or water garden the black hose is the most common but with regards to the more extensive pond with it's bottom drains, skimmer, external pump, UV Light and filtering system PVC is the best and easiest plumbing material to use.  PVC Schedule 40 has a variety of sizes for the pond builder to use and with its many adapters one can use different sizes of pipe to accomplish their plumbing needs of their pond project.

Some Basic Principles When Working with PVC

• When working with PVC you should only use and install between the temperature of 40 - 110 degrees F.

• Be sure the solvent cements for PVC are used in their original containers, if the cement is jelly-like and not in its free-flowing state it should not be used.

• When using PVC Solvent Cement some safety precautions should be used, cements are extremely flammable and not be stored or used near any type of heat source. Also, if using in confined areas a ventilating device should be used as to remove harmful vapours and minimize inhalation, as well as avoid frequent contact with the skin.

• When cutting PVC pipe use a handsaw with a mitre box, specially made PVC cutters or radial table saw to obtain a cut squarely, uneven type of cuts will reduce the bonding area needed.

• After your pipe cut remove any burrs from both the outside and inside of the pipe.

• Be sure that pipe and fittings are clean of all dirt, grease and moisture before cementing and avoid cementing in the rain.

• Before applying primer and/or cement to PVC first check with a dry fit to ensure proper interference fit.

• When cementing PVC pipe and fittings together it is recommended to use a primer before applying the solvent cement.

• Use of a primmer softens the surfaces in preparation of applying the solvent cement and should be used on both the pipe and fitting socket.

• When you are ready to cement your piping and fittings apply a thick, even layer on the pipe which is equal to the depth of the socket on your fitting, then apply a medium layer of cement in the socket, attach the pipe and fitting together without delay.

• When attaching pipe into socket of fitting use sufficient force to ensure pipe bottoms into fitting, can twist slightly as you are inserting the pipe into your fitting.

• You should hold pipe and fitting together for a short period of time as to eliminate push out, then with a clean cloth wipe the bead of cement from the joint where the pipe and fitting were joined.
